About The Empress
The Empress is a distinguished Grade II-listed pub standing proudly on The Stray in Harrogate. Originally known as the Empress Hotel, the site has roots going back centuries and was rebuilt in the late 19th century, with later alterations shaping the elegant façade you see today.
Legend has it that the name may pay homage to Alexandra Feodorovna - the last Empress of Russia - who visited Harrogate in 1894 and forged a lasting connection with the town. While the link is part of local lore, the town does host artefacts and stories related to her stay.

Surrounded by scenic parkland, The Empress boasts a beer garden to the rear and comfy outdoor seating to the front. Inside, you’ll find a tasteful blend of modern décor and classic pub charm, complete with four large screens broadcasting live sports, a pool table, and darts.
Food is served daily from 12 noon until 9 pm (6 pm on Sundays).
The menu features traditional pub fare, daily specials, and a Magnificent 7 selection for lighter appetites. The pies are already legendary, and the Sunday Carvery is a local favourite. Drink options include four cask ales, a curated wine list, and an impressive selection of gins.

For private functions — weddings, birthdays, or events — the venue offers a function room free of charge, with capacity for about 50 seated or up to 100 standing. And don’t forget quiz night every Thursday, adding to the warm, community atmosphere.
